Themes of human freedom and oppression appear consistently throughout the work of Polish artist Joanna Piotrowska. Comprised of three series, Stable Vices explores the dynamics of protection, freedom and oppression.

The first series was inspired by an illustrated self-defense manual by female psychologist Carol Gilligan. Although Piotrowska uses the formal approach of the manual, it depicts a girl confronting and fighting an absent object. In this book, girls expose the dangers of losing their voice in an oppressive society, and photograph their bodies to show their confrontation with an invisible enemy.

The second series shows a precarious space inside the house made of various pieces of furniture, blankets and pieces. This house looks like a children's play area or someone's refuge. Just as a space won't provide enough protection, this series showing another house inside a house suggests that the house isn't safe enough for a number of reasons.

The third series focuses on cages and comparable spaces made for humans, exploring the similarities between the lives of specific communities and animals and the environment in which they live.
